As artists working in body modification, you end up tattooing lions on a lot of clients. It's not hard to see why so many would want to embody the courage and regal feel of such a creature, and as a result, you end up getting asked for damn near the same lion every day.
Every once in a while, a client comes along that wants a version of this trope that's a little more fun, and allows us to really explore the subject. Galen took full advantage on this one, creating a piece for a repeat client that brings right and varied colors to the stern features of this majestic animal, and taking the time to really have fun with it.
As with almost all of his tattoos, color selection took a long time on this, selecting between dozens of subtly different inks for each color, ensuring the saturation levels felt consistent across the entire palette. This allowed a shift toward warmer and brighter feeling tones for the light sourcing, but cooler tones in the shadowing, without outright feeling muddy.
Do yourself a favor, if you're going to pick a subject that gets done often, take the time to really make it stand out!
